• Sharing of Ministries Abroad (SOMA) was founded in England in 1979 as a follow-on organization to the “Anglican Conference on Spiritual Renewal” held in Canterbury, England, immediately before the 1978 Lambeth Conference. At the pre-conference, 300 international senior clergy and bishops gathered in worship and prayer. There was an outbreak of God’s Spirit that filled all those in the room. A prophetic word given in Canterbury Cathedral which formed the basis of Sharing of Ministries Abroad (SOMA).

Since then, SOMA has followed its calling to ‘Join the Holy Spirit Tending to the Nervous System of the Body of Christ’. In practice this has often meant going to places that are hurting (e.g Rwanda in 1996), connecting the church internationally, and building the body both overseas and in the sending country as well.

Today SOMA continues to connect the church across the world, breaking barriers that can separate us and building up the body of Christ as we learn together.

  • Initially established in the United Kingdom in 1978, SOMA now has offices in the USA (1985), Canada (1986), Australia (1986), Ireland (1991), South Africa (1992), New Zealand (1994) and Singapore (1999). Since 1999, other SOMA national/regional bodies have been established in Uganda, Nigeria, Latin America and most recently Maylasia.
